Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder of the lower intestines in which the normal activity of the bowel is allied leading to abdominal distress and constipation or diarrhoea.

COMMON CAUSES OF IBS

• A genetic predisopsition
• Psychogenic factors - anxiety plays a major role in the development of IBS. The patients are often tense, conscientious individuals who worry excessively.
• Diet - at times certain substances like milk and barley products
• Infections - bacterial or amoebic infection
• Drugs - abuse of laxatives, antibiotics, and digoxin

COMMON SYMPTOMS

• Diarrhoea
• Periodic constipation or diarrhoea, painless diarrhoea, diarrhoea alternating with constipation
• Ribbon-like or pellet-like stools with or without mucus
• Pain, mainly in the right or left lower abdomen which is relieved after defecation, passing flatus and sometimes exacerbated by food
• Sense of incomplete and unsatisfactory defecation
• Diarrhoea occuring characteristically every morning and almost never at night.
• Unusual urgency or sensation of passing stools, more common immediately after meals
• Fullness, heaviness, gaseous distention
• Nausea, vomiting, weakness and lethargy

TREATMENT FOR IBS
Conventional treatment includes purgatives for constipation, antidiarrhoeals and anti-depressants for IBS. These merely reduce symptoms temporarily while causing harmful side-effects. Purgatives relax your bowels and their prolonged use leads to higher dependency of these drugs causing weakness and perhaps paralysis of the intestinal muscles. Anxiety, tremors, dryness of mouth, and sleeplessness, are caused by antidepressants. Anti-diarrhoeals can cause rash, bad taste in your mouth and giddiness.

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT is safe and gentle, without side-effects. The clinic takes into consideration the physical as well as the mental factors causing the condition, thus leading to a long term relief.
